BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method and is the certification method for a sustainable built environment. With this method, projects can be assessed on integral sustainability. The method was developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and is now used in more than 80 countries worldwide. In total, nearly 600,000 projects already have a BREEAM certificate.

National Scheme Operator

As of 2009, the organization Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) has made BREEAM suitable for the Netherlands and Dutch legislation and regulations. DGBC is therefore a National Scheme Operator. This means that DGBC is the only organization in the Netherlands that is allowed to manage and develop the quality mark under license from parent organization BRE. The abbreviation -NL has been added to BREEAM.

BREEAM-NL

BREEAM-NL has four quality marks. There is BREEAM-NL New Construction and Renovation for new-build and large-scale renovation projects. Existing buildings are assessed with In-Use, demolition projects with Demolition and Disassembly and entire areas with BREEAM-NL Communities. The BREEAM-NL quality marks are actively used in the Netherlands. Nearly 20 million square meters of floor space is certified with the quality mark.

Independent and active

DGBC is one of the most active Scheme Operators in the world and plays an important role in the continuous improvement of the sustainability label. DGBC has steering and advisory groups for each quality mark. There is also a Board of Experts, which independently monitors the quality of the quality mark. Finally, DGBC always works under license from the BRE. This ensures that the language for sustainability in the built environment remains uniform worldwide.

Why BREEAM-NL?

Sustainable

With BREEAM-NL you gain insight into the actual sustainability performance of your project. Not only in the field of energy, but across the board. Because BREEAM-NL is internationally recognized, has now existed for more than 10 years and is widely used in the Netherlands, the performance is valued by the market. In this way you work visibly and measurably on achieving the sustainability ambitions of your organization.

Cost saving

With a sustainable building you save on your operational costs. Moreover, sustainable projects are popular with tenants and users. That means that a building is worth more. And that you can ask for higher rents. This added value can amount to as much as 20%. A building with a BREEAM-NL certificate also offers subsidy opportunities; there are various subsidy schemes that you can claim.

Healthy

A building with a BREEAM-NL certificate is also a healthy building. This means that attention is paid to, for example, the indoor climate, ventilation, light and volatile organic compounds. A healthy working environment is better for the well-being and productivity of the users.

Future-proof

With BREEAM-NL you prepare your project for the future. The bar of BREEAM-NL is higher than what is required by law. This way your building is resistant to sudden events and gradual changes.
